Interstellar

Interstellar (2014)

Directed by Christopher Nolan

Screenplay by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan

Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, David Gyasi, Wes Bentley, John Lithgow, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Mackenzie Foy, Timothée Chalamet, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin and Josh Stewart

For the longest time, I have stayed away from Nolan's movie as of late. I felt that he has become to big from his britches. People blindly loved all of his movies, and I'm not part of the cult.

In a dystopian Earth where a blight has wiped out all chances of sustainability, Cooper (McConaughey) and his daughter, Murph (Foy) is shown coordinates to a supposed decommissioned NASA station. Cooper learns from Professor Brand (Caine) that there might be a chance to colonize an Earth like planet.

Why did this movie have to be almost three hours long? I think the characters pontificating about their motives got on my nerves. Thirty minutes could have been cut out and I would have been happy.

I'm not going to shit on the movie that much. I will say that first half on the movie was good. All about the journey, going back to be with loved ones. Cool. My heart ached for Cooper trying to find a way to get back home to his family.

The thing is when an action of a certain character is revealed, I rolled my eyes. The aftermath of that sent the movie careening off course. Nolan lost me. The ending of movie was nonsense.

Hans Zimmer's score... Why was music so loud? It was sonic booming all over during the action sequences. It took me out of the experience. I liked the score when it was quieter.

I don't hate the movie, but I think people are overly praising it.

Pride Month Movie - Day Twenty Five: Pride

Pride (2014)

Directed by Matthew Warchus

Screenplay by Stephen Beresford

Ben Schnetzer, George MacKay, Dominic West, Andrew Scott, Joe Gilgun, Faye Marsay, Freddie Fox, Paddy Considine, Imelda Staunton, and Bill Nighy

In the times that we are living in, I wanted to watch an inspiring story. A Facebook group I'm in suggested this movie. Since I've never heard of the situation, I felt a little out of the loop.

We are plunged into the the middle of the miner's strike in 1984. A young activist, Mark (Schnetzer) organizes a group of people in the neighborhood to help out the striking workers to help feed their families. The Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners or LGSM is formed. They reach out of a small village in South Wales lead up by Dai (Considine) to bridge the gap between the different groups.

The biggest problem I had with the movie is that being an American, I have no clue about cultural movements in different countries. If the movie could have explained more about what the workers were striking, I would have enjoyed the movie more.

I was worried that the movie was going to be like Stonewall, a big screen misinterpretation of events. I don't know if that happened here. I felt as though I was being manipulated a little bit. The swelling score, character's making heel turns, AIDS, gay bashing, all of that.

I understand that there were some real people in the movie and some not. Cool. I didn't love the movie as some other people would.

Pride Month Movie - Day One: Jongens

Boys (2014)

Directed by Mischa Kamp

Screenplay by Chris Westendorp & Jaap-Peter Enderle

Stars: Gijs Blom, Ko Zandvliet, Jonas Smulders, Ton Kas, Stijn Taverne, Myron Wouts and Ferdi Stofmeel

To celebrate Pride Month, I wanted to watch a movie under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella. I was looking the Rotten Tomatoes ratings of the best of the genre and I came up with this movie. A Dutch TV movie from 2014.

This is a coming of age story about a track athlete, Sieger (Blom) trying to keep his burgeoning feelings for his fellow teammate, Marc (Zandvliet) at bay.

It is a sweet story. The pacing of the movie was a bit off, because you can feel the commercial breaks were in.

I understood that Sieger was so deep in the closet that he almost got lost. I was praying that Marc would not get back together with Sieger. He treated Sieger like shit. The ending of the movie was not earned in my eyes.

B. A. D. Movie of the Week - Bad Johnson

Bad Johnson (2014)

Directed by Huck Botko

Screenplay by Jeff Tetreault

Stars: Cam Gigandet, Jaime Chung, Nick Thune, Katherine Cunnngham and Kevin Miller

All right. I have decided to change the name of "Terrible Movie Thursday" into "Baffling. Atrocious. Disaster. Movie of the Week."

This movie. Oh, boy. This is the epitome of B.A.D. material. I heard of this movie a couple of years ago when the screenwriter was making the rounds around the gay scene a couple of years ago. Heard that that he was a big homophobe, so that's not a good thing. Anyway, there was a movie made about his one and only feature length script.

This "romantic comedy" is about a typical fuckboy player, Rich (Gigandet) who thinks he is the shit because he's a personal trainer, somewhat attractive and let's his dick do the thinking. One day, he wishes that his dick would go away and his wish comes true. His dick becomes a person (Thune).

I hate these movies where the straight guy threats women like sex objects or dumb sluts. I know the bad guy of the movie is The Penis, but the whole movie was bad. No logic. When Rich's penis leaves, he has nothing there-- Ken doll privates-- the question is "How does he pee?" He doesn't go to the doctor to get a catheter. It was lazy writing. The ending of the movie was asinine.

Stay away from this movie.

I Have a Special Annoucement

People who have been following my blog know that I have a non-award award show called The Omies. It is to highlight the performances that were overlooked during the years. This year is quite different.

It pains me to say this, but I have decided to cancel the Omies for this year. It was my fault mainly because I used a sub-par poll system that fucked everything up. Another contributing factor to this decision was that only two people cast votes. Thank you to the twos of you that actually voted. It would not be fair to have multiple ties in every category. This is my way of "awarding" all of the nominees.

Sorry for the inconvenience. Hopefully, Polldaddy wouldn't be a dick charging an arm and a leg to use their service.

Trailer Trash: "Godzilla"

I was reading that the new Godzilla movie will be a helluva lot better than one produced in the late nineties with Matthew Broderick and some other assholes no one cares about. Judging by this trailer, I would see it when it comes out in May.
